ASOIAF Interactive Timeline
The world of A Song of Ice and Fire spans thousands of years of recorded history, but the story that matters most unfolds across just a few — from Robert's Rebellion through the War of the Five Kings and beyond. This interactive ASOIAF timeline collects the pivotal moments that shape the saga, presented in strict chronological order so you can follow the chain of cause and effect that prose chapters — with their shifting viewpoints and non-linear revelations — sometimes obscure. Each timeline event includes the key participants, relevant book chapters, and locations, giving you a structured way to trace how individual battles, assassinations, weddings, and journeys ripple across Westeros and Essos. The events are drawn from all five published novels, covering the complete span of the main series. Looking for a Game of Thrones timeline that follows the show's chronology instead? This page follows the book canon, which diverges from the HBO adaptation in later seasons. However, the core events — the death of Jon Arryn, Ned Stark's execution, the Red Wedding, the rise of Daenerys Targaryen — are shared between both versions. Use the search bar to find specific events, scroll through the chronological feed, and click any event to open a detail panel with full context. From there, you can jump directly into the relationship graph to see how the characters involved in that event are connected across the wider story.

Story Timeline
The Great Council of 101 AC
King Jaehaerys I convened the lords of Westeros to settle the succession. The council chose Prince Viserys over his cousin Rhaenys, establishing the precedent that a male heir takes precedence over a female claimant. This decision echoed forward into the Dance of the Dragons.
The Dance of the Dragons
A devastating Targaryen civil war between the blacks loyal to Princess Rhaenyra and the greens supporting King Aegon II. The conflict saw dragon fight dragon and ended with the death of nearly all Targaryen dragons.
The Tourney at Harrenhal
The great tourney hosted by Lord Whent where Prince Rhaegar Targaryen crowned Lyanna Stark as Queen of Love and Beauty, passing over his own wife Elia Martell. The mysterious Knight of the Laughing Tree appeared and vanished, setting events in motion that would end the Targaryen dynasty.
Robert's Rebellion
The war that overthrew the Targaryen dynasty. Robert Baratheon, Eddard Stark, and Jon Arryn rebelled against King Aerys II after Prince Rhaegar abducted Lyanna Stark. The rebellion ended with Rhaegar's death at the Trident and the Sack of King's Landing.
The Sack of King's Landing
The final act of Robert's Rebellion. Tywin Lannister's army arrived at the gates professing loyalty to Aerys II, then turned on the city. Jaime Lannister killed the Mad King to prevent the wildfire plot, while Gregor Clegane murdered Princess Elia Martell and her children.
The Tower of Joy
Eddard Stark and six companions confronted three Kingsguard at a tower in the Red Mountains of Dorne where Lyanna Stark was held. Only Eddard and Howland Reed survived. What Lyanna whispered to her brother before dying became a secret that would shape the fate of the realm.
The Battle of the Blackwater
Stannis Baratheon's fleet and army assaulted King's Landing. Tyrion Lannister's wildfire chain trap destroyed much of the fleet, and a last-minute relief force led by Tywin Lannister and Mace Tyrell shattered Stannis's army. The battle saved Joffrey's crown and cemented the Lannister-Tyrell alliance.
The Red Wedding
Lord Walder Frey and Roose Bolton conspired to murder Robb Stark, his mother Catelyn, and his bannermen during the wedding feast of Edmure Tully at the Twins. The massacre broke the power of the Stark rebellion and earned House Frey undying infamy.
The Purple Wedding
King Joffrey Baratheon was poisoned at his own wedding feast to Margaery Tyrell. He died choking in his mother's arms. The murder was orchestrated by Olenna Redwyne and Petyr Baelish, who used Sansa Stark as an unwitting courier for the poison hidden in her hairnet.
The Battle of Castle Black
Mance Rayder's wildling army attacked the Wall from the north while a raiding party scaled it from the south. Jon Snow led the defense after most senior rangers fell, holding the Wall long enough for Stannis Baratheon's unexpected cavalry charge to shatter the wildling host.
