He backs Renly, then joins the Lannisters, bringing Margaery marriages to Joffrey and later Tommen. Family standing shapes his behavior in trials and contests over office. As Hand, he faces his daughter’s trial before the Faith alongside a fresh invasion. Commanding soldiers does not give him an uncomplicated way to dismiss the accusations.

Stannis Baratheon's fleet and army assaulted King's Landing. Tyrion Lannister's wildfire chain trap destroyed much of the fleet, and a last-minute relief force led by Tywin Lannister and Mace Tyrell shattered Stannis's army. The battle saved Joffrey's crown and cemented the Lannister-Tyrell alliance.
