The character in context

Stannis, Robert’s younger brother and Lord of Dragonstone, claims the throne because he considers Robert’s supposed heirs illegitimate. He relies on Melisandre’s power but loses at the Blackwater. He then brings aid to the Wall, discusses rights and duties with Jon, and seeks northern support against the Boltons. Snow stalls his army’s advance. A letter sent to Castle Black claims he has been killed, but A Dance with Dragons does not independently confirm that report.
