The character in context

Ygritte is a free folk spearwife whom Jon captures beyond the Wall and then releases. When he joins the free folk, she speaks for him, and they become lovers. Her stories and customs reveal a life beyond the categories he has inherited, without resolving their divided loyalties. After Jon returns to the Watch, she takes part in the attack on Castle Black. Mortally wounded by an arrow, she dies in his arms. The books do not identify the archer responsible.
