The character in context

Willas is Mace Tyrell's eldest son and heir to Highgarden. Entered into a tourney too young, he is unhorsed by Oberyn and his leg is crushed beneath his mount. The Tyrells blame Oberyn, but Willas bears no grudge and continues corresponding with him about horses. Willas never appears directly in the five novels; his kindness, learning and competence come through reports by relatives and rivals. After the ironborn take the Shield Islands, he raises forces and warns Oldtown, showing that the absent heir so often treated as a marriage prize is also governing the Reach.
