A peaceful reign joined to a failed succession

The character in context

Viserys I succeeded Jaehaerys I and designated his daughter Rhaenyra as heir; after his death, the rival claims of Rhaenyra and Aegon II produced the Dance of the Dragons. The five main novels preserve this dynastic skeleton mainly through an appendix and Jaime's reading of the White Book, not enough to prove a complete portrait of weakness, folly, or tragic wisdom. A peaceful reign and a failed succession settlement can coexist without importing television characterization.
