The character in context

Val is Dalla’s sister, treated by southerners as a wildling princess available for marriage, a status the free folk do not recognize in the same way. After the defeat at the Wall, she cares for the baby and remains at Castle Black. Jon sends her to find Tormund, and she brings him back to negotiate. Her competence exceeds the role of captive or marriage prize, while her response to Shireen’s greyscale exposes enduring differences in belief.
