Bargaining for survival

The character in context

Tormund follows Mance and introduces Jon to free folk life through extravagant stories. After defeat at the Wall he leads survivors and negotiates passage with Jon, accepting payments and hostages. He gives up his own gold armbands before asking others to surrender their wealth. His losses to the Others make survival more than a bargaining point. Late in the fifth novel he agrees to take charge of the planned Hardhome rescue; its outcome remains unwritten.
