The character in context

Syrio Forel is a Braavosi swordsman who says he once served as First Sword to the Sealord. Eddard hires him to teach Arya the water dance, and his lessons put observation, balance and mastery of fear before brute force. Their language becomes a discipline Arya repeatedly uses to survive. When the Lannisters seize the Red Keep, Syrio faces Meryn Trant and armored guards with only a wooden sword, buying Arya time to escape. The novels show neither a body nor reliable later news, so his death or survival cannot be treated as confirmed.
