The character in context

Pycelle serves successive kings as Grand Maester, combining learned office with persistent Lannister partiality. During Ned’s inquiry into Jon Arryn’s death he supplies information while discounting poison. Tyrion later uses conflicting confidences to expose his allegiance and imprisons him. Restored to the council, he remains involved in governance. In the fifth novel’s epilogue, Varys removes both him and Kevan; the television circumstances of his death do not apply.
