An office remembered more clearly than its holder's motives

The character in context

Otto Hightower was Hand to Viserys I, father of Alicent, and grandfather of Aegon II. The five main novels directly preserve his name only in Davos's review of royal Hands, too little evidence for a complete portrait of calculating ambition. The other chapters supply the succession conflict and Criston Cole's kingmaking precedent; they establish Otto's political context rather than directly witnessing each decision attributed to him.
