The character in context

Once a man of the Watch, Mance unites rival free folk into a host seeking refuge from the Others beyond the Wall’s defenses. Stannis captures him, but Melisandre’s glamour saves him from the execution believed to have killed him. As the singer Abel, he enters Winterfell to help rescue the girl presented as Arya. Ramsay’s later letter makes claims about his fate that the narrative has not independently confirmed.
