The character in context

Raised at Winterfell as Eddard Stark’s acknowledged bastard, Jon joins the Night’s Watch and learns to work with recruits from very different backgrounds. Elected Lord Commander, he brings free folk through the Wall against the threat of the Others. His policies divide the Watch. His final chapter in A Dance with Dragons ends with an attack by his own brothers; his subsequent fate remains unresolved in the five published novels.
