The character in context

Joffrey succeeds as Robert’s presumed eldest son, though his parents are Cersei and Jaime. He orders Ned’s execution despite plans for clemency, leaving Sansa a hostage exposed to humiliation and violence. Tyrion and Tywin constrain his actions: possession of the crown does not make him an independent ruler. At his wedding feast with Margaery, he humiliates Tyrion and then dies of poison. Cersei’s accusation against Tyrion opens another struggle within the royal family.
