The character in context

Jeor leaves Bear Island and becomes Lord Commander of the Night’s Watch. He makes Jon his steward and gives him Longclaw after Jon saves his life. His great ranging investigates missing rangers, gathering free folk and the threat of the Others. Defeat at the Fist drives the survivors back to Craster’s Keep, where mutineers kill him. Dying, he charges Sam to warn the Wall and asks that his exiled son Jorah take the black.
