The character in context

Jaehaerys I survives in the five main novels as the Old King and Conciliator, a benchmark for long Targaryen peace and institution building. Chapters around Daenerys and Bran recall his dynastic place, roads, or descendants without fully testing the costs of his celebrated rule. His succession also leads toward Viserys I and the later civil war, so the remembered golden age cannot be separated from what its settlement left unresolved.
