The character in context

The High Sparrow rises from a movement of believers displaced by war to become High Septon. His austere life and attention to victims challenge courtly authority. Seeking political support and relief from debt, Cersei permits the Faith to rearm but misjudges his independence. The arrests of Margaery and Cersei force royalty to face religious judgment. That conflict remains open at the end of the fifth novel, without the television destruction of the sept.
