The character in context

Grenn first clashes with Jon during training, then accepts his help and joins the friends protecting Sam. On the great ranging he urges Sam to keep moving during the retreat and witnesses an Other die by dragonglass. He returns to defend the Wall, where shared danger gives their friendship substance beyond barracks jokes. He does not die defending the gate in the novels: Jon later assigns him and Pyp to Eastwatch.
