The character in context

Edric is Robert's acknowledged bastard, raised at Storm's End by members of Renly's household. On Dragonstone he studies and plays with Shireen, believing the annual gifts sent in Robert's name came from his father. Melisandre first takes his blood with leeches, then argues that his king's blood makes him a necessary sacrifice. While Stannis weighs victory against killing a child, Davos secretly sends Edric toward Lys. The fifth novel only confirms that he remains protected; his story is not the adaptation's merged character arc.
