The character in context

Doran rules Dorne with caution that others mistake for surrender. He restrains demands to avenge Oberyn while secretly seeking a Targaryen alliance. Prolonged secrecy, however, lets Arianne misunderstand his succession plans and attempt her failed coup. After revealing the old marriage pact and Quentyn’s mission, he redistributes family responsibilities. His desire to protect ordinary Dornish lives remains in tension with the vengeance he has planned.
