Brynden Tully

Kinship that refuses surrender

The character in context

Brynden, called the Blackfish, is Hoster Tully’s younger brother. He leaves service at the Bloody Gate to aid Catelyn and Robb, contributing scouting and military experience. After the Red Wedding he continues to hold Riverrun and refuses to trust Jaime’s proposed settlement. When Edmure surrenders the castle, he enables his uncle to escape. The published novels leave Brynden’s subsequent whereabouts open rather than killing him inside the castle.
