The character in context

Brynden Rivers is a Great Bastard of Aegon IV and Melissa Blackwood, called Bloodraven for the red birthmark across his face. He supports Daeron's line in the Blackfyre rebellions and later serves as master of whisperers, Hand and Lord Commander of the Night's Watch. He disappears from public record on a ranging beyond the Wall. Bran eventually meets an ancient greenseer bound to weirwood roots whom the text connects with Bloodraven and the three-eyed crow, while the scope and purpose of his long intervention remain obscure.
