The character in context

Benjen, Eddard’s younger brother, serves as First Ranger of the Night’s Watch. At Winterfell he warns Jon that an oath can cost a life not yet experienced; at the Wall he refuses his nephew special treatment. Sent to search for missing rangers, he does not return, though two companions’ bodies are found. Family hopes outlast the available evidence, and the five published novels leave his eventual fate unresolved.
