The cost of claiming kingship again

Contains spoilers through A Dance with Dragons. Television events and unfinished preview chapters are outside this collection.

The character in context

Balon’s earlier rebellion costs him two sons and leaves Theon a hostage at Winterfell. The War of the Five Kings offers another chance at kingship. He rejects Robb’s alliance and attacks the depleted north instead, while Theon’s return fails to erase doubts about his allegiance. Balon later dies in a fall from a bridge at Pyke during a storm, followed by Euron’s return. Suspicion surrounding the death is not a witnessed account of its cause.
