The character in context

Aemon serves the Night’s Watch as a maester while carrying the history of his Targaryen family. He draws on that history when counselling Jon about love and sworn duty, and supports both Jon and Sam with his learning. He later leaves the Wall with Sam for Oldtown. News of Daenerys and her dragons prompts him to reconsider prophecy, but he dies at sea before reaching his destination. Sam carries his conclusions and unfinished hopes onward to the Citadel.
