Aegon V

Reform, marriage and lost dragons

The character in context

Aegon V spends his youth as Egg, squire to Duncan the Tall, and reaches the throne despite standing far down the succession. As king he tries to improve the lot of the smallfolk, but without dragons he meets resistance from great lords, while his children's broken political betrothals weaken his alliances. Aegon and members of his family die in the fire at Summerhall. The five novels connect the disaster to an attempt to hatch dragon eggs but do not provide a complete account of the rite, its motives or its failure.
